Subject: Deep Concern Regarding Treaty Rights and Water Protection in Alberta

To: [MLA Name / Premier Danielle Smith]

I am writing to you today as a concerned resident of [Your Town/City] to express my serious concern regarding the Government of Alberta’s recent approach to First Nations’ consultation and land management.

Specifically, I am troubled by policies such as the Water Amendment Act and the continued push for coal exploration in our headwaters. These actions appear to treat First Nations’ consultation as a “checkbox” exercise rather than a binding legal and moral requirement.

In the Alberta region, water is our most precious shared resource. By failing to meaningfully consult with First Nations, the province is risking the health of our environment and disregarding the Treaty rights that are the foundation of this province.

I am calling on the Government of Alberta to:

  • Respect the Treaties: Acknowledge that Treaty rights cannot be legislated away and must be the primary consideration in all land and water decisions.
  • Implement UNDRIP: Align provincial policies with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to ensure free, prior, and informed consent.
  • Protect our Headwaters: Stop all exploration and policy changes that threaten the clean water that millions of First Nations and Albertans rely on.

Treaties are not just historical documents; they are living agreements that require ongoing respect and partnership. I urge you to prioritize these obligations and stop the push for policies that undermine Indigenous jurisdiction and environmental safety.
I look forward to hearing how your office plans to address these concerns and uphold the honour of the Crown in its dealings with First Nations.

Sincerely,
