True reconciliation requires real partnership, not closed-door legislation. The Chiefs Steering Committee on Technical Services (representing Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations) has raised serious alarms over Bill C-37, the new First Nations Clean Water Act.

Despite promises of working together, the government sidelined First Nations and removed explicit recognition of Inherent and Treaty water rights. We cannot fix a crisis with policies that shift the burden onto First Nations peoples without proper funding frameworks.

I stand with Treaty leadership in calling on Minister Mandy Gull-Masty to pause Bill C-37 and return to transparent, good faith dialogue.

Water is life. But right now, the federal government has tabled First Nations water legislation without the meaningful input of the very peoples it impacts.

The Chiefs Steering Committee for Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations just called out the government for drafting this bill in secret, ignoring the Treaty Bilateral Table on Water that they signed just six months ago and cutting out recognition of inherent Treaty rights.

Passing flawed legislation that underfunds infrastructure and ignores First Nations isn’t the answer. Minister Gull-Masty needs to pause Bill C-37 and actually work with First Nations leadership, not around them.
