Subject: Concerns about the major project reform proposals and Bill C-5
Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing as a member of the public to share my deep concerns about the major project reform proposals in Bill C-5. I understand the government wants to speed up approvals for major projects, but I am worried these changes will have far-reaching impacts on our water and ecosystems, reduce accountability, and undermine Treaty and inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples.
My main concerns are:
- Too much power may be concentrated in the approval process: If projects can be approved more quickly with fewer checks, people may lose trust that decisions are being made fairly and transparently.
- Federal responsibilities should not be reduced: Streamlining reviews should not weaken the federal government’s duty to uphold rights, follow the law, and protect the public interest.
These are important changes that will impact people for generations and I believe they should be considered much more carefully, with First Nations consent and strong public accountability.
We cannot undo what we put into our waters and lands. We are at a critical tipping point for nature, with the influx of resource-heavy data centres and constant failures in the oil and gas sectors that are polluting regions and getting people sick.
I ask your government to slow this process down and make sure First Nations Peoples, affected communities, and the public have enough time and information to respond in a meaningful way.
Thank you for taking these concerns seriously.
Sincerely,
