CSC Statement on Alberta Court of King's Bench Decision

The Chiefs Steering Committee on Technical Services (CSC) welcomes the decision of the Alberta Court of King’s Bench to invalidate the approval of the separatist referendum petition that aimed to violate First Nations’ Treaties and inherent rights to these lands and waters.

The CSC stands with applicants Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Blood Tribe, Piikani Nation, and Siksika Nation, as well as all First Nations opposing Alberta’s unconstitutional separation agenda and efforts to break Treaty.

While we are glad to see today’s outcome, this situation has shown there is much more work to be done to acknowledge the truths of this land, before reconciliation could even be possible. This is not the end—as First Nations Peoples, we have a road ahead to inform, educate and challenge the UCP Government about their own understanding of Treaty.

As long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the rivers flow, the CSC stands with Treaty First Nations across the Alberta region and will do the necessary work to ensure Treaty rights are not only protected, but respected—and we will continue to hold this government accountable.
