Subject: Stop Downplaying the Dangers of Oilsands Tailings Water

To: [Premier Danielle Smith]

I am writing to you today to demand that your government stop downplaying the dangers of oilsands tailings water.

Your recent statements claiming that cleaning and releasing this toxic wastewater into the Athabasca River is “safe” and “evidence-based” are deeply misleading.

Here is why the public is concerned:

  • Tailings water is toxic: These ponds contain trillions of liters of waste filled with harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons. Leaks from mines like Kearl have already proven that this water threatens local ecosystems and human health.
  • The technology is unproven: There is no independent, long-term scientific proof that we can safely strip all the toxins out of this water at such a massive scale. If this water were truly safe, oil companies would reuse it in their own operations instead of dumping it into a river.
  • First Nations say no: Downstream First Nations have made it clear that they do not consent to having industrial wastewater dumped into the rivers they rely on for drinking water, fishing, and their way of life.

My Demands:

  • Stop using public relations to pretend that dumping oilsands wastewater into our river systems is safe.
  • Halt all plans to dump this water until completely independent, third-party scientists can prove it will not harm downstream communities.
  • Demand oil and gas companies to recycle their own water rather than using fresh water and dumping their leftovers into public rivers.

Water is life. We cannot sacrifice the health of our environment and downstream communities.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
