Subject – Protecting First Nations Water Rights & Source Water in Alberta

Dear [Name of MLA or MP],

My name is [Your Name] and I am a constituent in [Your Neighborhood/Riding]. I am writing to express my strong support for First Nations water rights and to urge you to advocate for the rights of First Nations Peoples in all upcoming water and infrastructure legislation discussions.

Access to clean water is a fiduciary duty of the Crown, and a requirement of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. I am concerned that current provincial and federal discussions—specifically regarding new major projects and pipelines and Alberta’s Bill 7 Water Amendment Act—are failing to put the health of our watersheds and the inherent rights of Treaty Nations at the forefront.

I am asking you to:
• Support Source Water Protection: Ensure that any water legislation includes legal protections for the sources of water (rivers and aquifers) from upstream industrial impacts.
• Respect Indigenous Jurisdiction: Support First Nations-led programs, policies and frameworks to guide the sustainable management of our water systems.
• Uphold Treaty Rights: Oppose any policy that attempts to bypass the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations regarding water.
Water is a finite resource. As my representative, I look forward to hearing how you and your party plan to protect it for all of us by upholding the rights of the original stewards of this land.

Sincerely,
[Your Name] [Your Address/Postal Code]
