Treaty 6, 7, 8 Territories – July 2, 2026<\/span> \u2014 <\/strong>The Chiefs Steering Committee on Technical Services (CSC),\u00a0representing\u00a0First Nations across Treaty 6, 7, and 8 territories,\u00a0rejects the Government of Alberta\u2019s\u00a0announcement\u00a0detailing a\u00a0new oil pipeline. In a time of climate crisis and with\u00a0promises of Indigenous consultation, the Governments of Canada and Alberta\u00a0have\u00a0doubled\u00a0down on the very actions that will risk the lives of every person on these lands.<\/p>\n Treaty Chiefs\u00a0object to\u00a0both the Government of Canada and UCP Government of Alberta\u2019s accelerated infrastructure plans that\u00a0have, once again, been\u00a0created without engagement or consent,\u00a0willfully ignoring sacred Treaty covenants and our Peoples\u2019\u00a0inherent right to water and land. It is\u00a0Treaty Peoples who\u00a0will\u00a0live with the consequences of\u00a0Alberta and Canada\u2019s\u00a0actions, and it is our\u00a0Peoples\u00a0who will stand up to it.<\/p>\n \u201cUCP Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister\u00a0Mark\u00a0Carney continue to pass the pen between themselves to draw lines through our territories without our consent, all\u00a0while ignoring the health of our ecosystems,\u201d says Chief Rupert Meneen,\u00a0Tallcree\u00a0Tribal Government and Chair of the CSC. \u201cA pipeline like this\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be fast-tracked in secret\u00a0and expect First Nations to\u00a0be\u00a0willing participants,\u00a0despite our repeated attempts to work\u00a0on a water strategy\u00a0in good faith.\u00a0What we expect is what the colonial Governments of Canada and Alberta are legally required to\u00a0demonstrate: Honour of the Crown.\u201d<\/p>\n Treaty\u00a0Chiefs\u00a0are calling for all\u00a0citizens\u00a0across these\u00a0shared\u00a0lands\u00a0to\u00a0rise\u00a0with them\u00a0and\u00a0stand against this\u00a0project.\u00a0There are significant risks to water when moving millions of barrels of bitumen\u2014source waters\u00a0must\u00a0be protected and preserved for today and the future. We all need water to\u00a0live\u00a0and through\u00a0projects\u00a0that continue to extract at all costs, these\u00a0governments will create a future where water is sold to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a pattern of disrespect.\u00a0Directly following the tabling of Bill C-37 behind closed doors,\u00a0this rush to secure a pipeline shows a systemic disregard for our inherent authority,\u201d says Chief Sheldon Sunshine, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. \u201cPremier Smith and Prime Minister Carney need to understand that bypassing nation-to-nation consent will end in our unwavering opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n
